Part-time Line Cook (Contract)

Job Description

St. Leonard’s Place Peel (SLPP) provides community-based residential support for men who have significant mental health and substance abuse problems, as well as those who have had involvement with the justice system. SLPP believes every member of our community has value and purpose in life and can make significant contributions once fully supported.
The Line Cook is responsible for the preparation of food in a timely, efficient, sanitary and consistent manner. The Cook must be prepared to work in a high-pressure work environment, being efficient and knowledgeable about food preparation needs. The Line Cook must work as a team member in a dynamic workplace, follow all safety procedures, and have a high threshold for heat in a kitchen environment. The Line Cook performs a variety of food preparation duties other than cooking, such as chopping ingredients, separating portions, weighing cuts, preparing cold foods, slicing meat, preparing pre-baked goods and making salads.

Job Duties
• Server & runner for mealtimes
• Chop ingredients and prepare menu items based on the Chef’s menu
• Weigh and measure ingredients and portions
• Wash, peel and/or cut various foods to prepare for cooking or serving
• Use manual and/or electric appliances to clean, peel, slice, and trim foods
• Assist in catering set up when required
• Store food in designated containers and storage areas for easy access
• Inform supervisors when supplies are getting low or equipment is not working properly
• Receive and store food supplies, equipment, and utensils in refrigerators, cupboards, and other storage areas
• Stock cupboards and refrigerators
• Refill & clean steamer table & refill with fresh water
• Clean work areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware
• Clean dishes and mop floors, help with scheduled cleaning regime
• Remove trash and clean kitchen garbage containers
• Carry food supplies, equipment, and utensils to and from storage and work areas
• Perform other duties as necessary

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Minimum 1 year of kitchen experience preferred
• Food training program completion
• Current Food Handler’s Certificate
• Current Driver’s Licence with clean drivers abstract (preferred)
• Knowledge of methods and procedures for serving food, principles of sanitation, and principles of safe food handling required
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs
• Effective communication skills
• Highly effective teamwork skills
• Attention to detail in all areas of work
• Superior time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
• Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
• Strong work ethic and positive team attitude

Work Conditions
• This position will spend 100% of the time standing
• Occasional environmental exposures to extreme temperatures and water
• Must be able to transport up to 50 pounds on occasion and up to 35 pounds regularly
• Manual dexterity required to use knives and kitchen appliances
