Social Service Worker (Weekends) – Out of the Cold Program
JOB DESCRIPTION – (Weekend work) Social Service Worker Duration – (4 months) November 15, 2021 – March 15, 2022
Shift Focus – Saturday and Sunday; Evening Shift (5:30pm to 1:30am) *3 openings Saturday and Sunday; Overnight Shift (1:00am to 9:00 am) *3 openings
St. Leonard’s Place Peel (SLPP) is a non-profit charitable organization that provides transitional and reintegration housing for men dealing with situations of homelessness, mental illness, addiction and/or conflict with the law.
St. Leonard’s Place Peel is opening an Out of the Cold program from November-March and looking to recruit staff for the 4-month contracts. We are looking to recruit people who are committed to client care, have experience working with men that have experienced homelessness and have excellent communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome clients to the program
- Complete intake paperwork and create/maintain electronic records
- Complete regular checks of the sleeping area to ensure client and staff safety
- Stay on site during the entire shift
- Communicate with shift partner regularly throughout the night
- Provide guests with healthy snacks and continental breakfasts
- Distribute hygiene kits and winter accessories to guests
- Conduct daily sanitization of facilities to ensure the health and safety of guests
- Ensure guests use designated eating and smoking areas
- Maintain documentation as per policies
- Recording and reporting all incidents
- Answering phone and responding to questions about the program and potential referrals
- Collaborate with community partners
- Responsible for tracking of health concerns reported
- Provide additional support to guests when required
- Assist with referrals and linkages to other programs
- Provide information to oncoming staff
- Read the communication log
- Assist with housing searches and providing community
- Screening all guests for COVID as per Public Health guidelines and temperature checks will be performed upon entry
- Ensure all IPAC measures are followed
- Laundry as required
Minimum Qualification
- Graduate/Diploma of a Social Service Worker Program or equivalent
Other Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with men that are homeless and may have substance use and mental health issues
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite software
- Superior crisis prevention and intervention skills
- Great problem-solving skills
- Excellent knowledge of community resources
- Current CPR/First Aid
- Team player
- Clear Police check for vulnerable sector
Salary: $22/hour
